We are exceptionally delighted to announce that September 9-12, 2010, the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive & Festival will take place in our new home, the historic FLAMINGO Hotel & Casino!

Bugsy Siegel's desert dream, The Flamingo, has anchored the Las Vegas Strip since they started rolling dice in 1946. This self-contained casino and resort offers everything an adventurous belly dancer could want--delicious restaurants, an amazing pool, and ample space for our classes & shopping.

Set on the famous four corners of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, this hotel combines heart-pounding Las Vegas excitement with hospitality and service that's second to none. We couldn't be happier with our new home!

Additionally, we have a new group of magnificent artists who will be tantalizing us with their performances and teaching us their secrets. We are pleased to present the 2010 Headliners:

Aradia of Las Vegas http://www.aradialv.com
John Compton http://www.hahbiru.com
Asharah http://www.asharah.com
Fahtiem http://www.fahtiem.com
Moria Chappell http://www.moriachappell.com
Princess Farhana http://www.princessfarhana.com

We are excited to see our homegrown event expand each year and attract hundreds of dancers into our Vegas community. We are also excited to be able to feature so many professionals instructors & performers. Thanks for supporting this event and allowing us to promote the Las Vegas community to the broader world of belly dance. We are looking forward to serving our community.

September 9-12, 2010 at the FLAMINGO!!

Attend the Vegas Intensive--Free

Hello everyone. (from Director of Volunteers, Reema)

I have been asked to be the Director of Volunteers for the LV Intensive 2009. I am looking for enthusiastic, fun loving people who want to take part in one of the biggest and best events Las Vegas has to offer. So many performers come to Las Vegas and witness first-hand the comradery and family like atmosphere at this event and a great part is owed to all the wonderful and generous volunteers we count on each year.

Additionally, volunteers get the added perks of taking some classes or attending the shows for free, and have fun. There are many opportunities to be involved in. We need people to be ushers,to help at the registration tables, and to check people into classes. We also need help running the festival stage, runners for vendors & performers, personal assistants to the teachers, etc. We'd enjoy having some "belly husbands" who want to help move, set up, and tear down equipment as well as dealing with technical aspects of the event. Please join our Bellydance Intensive family. If you are interested, please e-mail me direct at reema@bellydanceintensive.com.

Sincerely and Yours in Dance,

Reema, Director of Volunteers

More reasons to come to the Vegas Intensive! Our room rates have dropped!!

Due to the crazy economic climate, the room rates at Palace Station dropped below our previously contracted rates. They have graciously agreed to match the low rates that they are currently offering.

We are very excited to announce that our new room rates are $20-$30 less a night! That's a substantial savings to our attendees and also makes it very easy for our locals to get rooms too.

Anyone that has already booked with our group Reservation ID "PCIBDI9", will automatically receive the new rates. If you happened to book your room outside of our block, please drop an email to Samira@bellydanceintensive.com so we can make sure that the event gets credit for your booking, although you will need to contact Palace Station directly to get our rates. Thanks so much!!

Hey all,

I'm going to be visiting S. California April 11-13 for my sister's 21st birthday, and was hoping I could hook up with some dancers while I'm down there, either perform a little or go to an event.

She lives in Oxnard, but she suggested somewhere on Venice Beace/surrounding area.

I hope this isn't intruding, I don't want to come in to disturbe the area's dance flow, just you know, get out there a little and meet new people :]

Thanks, looking forward to it!

The Casbah Lounge, Evening of Middle Eastern Dance

The next Casbah Lounge, Evening of Middle Eastern Dance at Annabelle's Chocolate Lounge near Placerville, CA, is December 6th.
This show is produced by Vahana's "Hips are for Healing" and is in its second year running.

It is always a charitable event with this evening's donations going to Animal Outreach of the Motherlode.

The December show is traditionally the "alternative" music show, so while you can still dance to Middle Eastern music, you can also branch out in December if you want to try something different. (no profanity, please.)

Contact Vahana if you would like to dance or for more information.

dancingesquire@yahoo.com

Since tribe isn't really reliable, I started a new group for the Casbah Lounge:

Greetings!
My name is Amber,
I'm a native born So Cal girl. Currently I'm in the Navy (I am a Weather Forecaster, been in 10 yrs, Love it, plan to make it a career), and I'm engaged to a wonderful man (Albert).
I've lived all over the world, but my favorite areas have been the different countries in the Middle East (Lived out there for quite a few years, I learned a lot about Bedouin/Nomadic style Belly Dancing while I was out there).
I love to talk about anything music or dance related, and am looking to talk with, and possibly gather with others who share the same interests

I hope that wasn't too long of a summary, if there is anything more you would like to know, please, ask away. : )
Workshops with Amara - San Diego - May 4

Amara will be teaching 2 workshops in San Diego
May 4

12:30-2:30
Workshop I - Dynamic Combinations for Any Kind of Music

Amara will drill a series of short combinations focusing on strength, flexibility, balance, isolation, and layering. Then we will rework the combinations by changing their speed, size, and quality (gooey, sharp, and shimmies) in order to assist in our visual presentation of any kind of music.
These combinations and exercises can be applied to create both choreographies and improvisations.

2:45-4:45
Workshop II - Fusion Techniques
Amara takes a unique approach to this emerging form as she presents techniques and tools on how to create Fusion with ANY dance form. Learn the differences between sequential and simultaneous fusion concepts, explore where to find various dance elements to fuse, and discuss issues of when and why to fuse.
Fusion is a great way to add to your current vocabulary, foster creativity, and push your dancing to new heights.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels and all dance forms.

Meryem Vani's showcase on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 is still looking for a few dancers. The show takes place at the Tsunami Cafe at 4019 Sunset Blvd. in Silverlake, Los Angeles. Starts at (approximately) 7pm and ends at (approximately) 9pm. Please bring your own CD or cued-up audio cassette tape. Between five and seven minutes is ideal. No swords or fire. Snakes are okay. If you're interested, please contact Meryem Vani at (323) 819-1948. All levels of experience more than welcome. The space itself is a a downstairs theatre that "feels" rather like off off broadway. Thanks in advance!

I know many of you are attending the Tribal Fusion Faire but my boyfriend and I will be in Southern California to see Andrea Bocelli. However, the concert is Saturday night which leaves my Friday wide open. I want an opportunity to dance outside of my comfort zone (Las Vegas Haflas). I will pack dance gear and some music just in case. If anyone knows anything in the Orange County Los Angeles County areas please let me know. Thanks.

Nomadiqa Ethnic Fusion and Arabesque Beats - Repost

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,

Nomadiqa

You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Please bring finger cymbals

Class schedule:
Fri-Sat-Sun
Registration & warm up 9:30-10 am

anyone in L.A. selling an assuit dress or willing to rent even?

I know its a long shot, but I'm wondering if ianyone is looking to sell an assuit dress in the L.A. area? I just need it really for one song, one night OR IF anyone would be interested in renting theirs to me (again it will be danced in for litterally one 5 minute song and I can pay like $30 bucks and pick it up on that day and deliver it back to you the next day or that night after the show, even)? It sounds wierd to say, but I will shower almost immidiately before wearing it, will not break a sweat AT ALL as the number is short , and I don't smoke and wont spray perfume. oh yeah, and ofcourse Ill take it off immediately after using it!

If so, please email me on my tribe email!
thanks!

Dance in the Desert Festival and Workshop with Amara

***Dance in the Desert***
Saturday Jan. 27, 9-5 pm, the local MECDA (Middle Eastern Culture and Dance
Association) Desert Communities chapter is holding their annual Dance Festival at the Palmdale Cultural Center, 38350 Sierra Highway, Palmdale CA 93550.

It all starts off with an exciting 2-hour *Fusion Techniques* workshop by Amara! Learn how to fuse a multitude of dance styles with your belly dance to make your personal dance style even more unique and polished. You have to know the "rules" before you can break them! Amara is a fantastic professional belly dancer and choreographer, as well as the producer of EEMED (Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance) events, and she works with many well-respected dance troupes (like Desert Sin!) and dancers. We are very fortunate to have an instructor/performer of Amara's stature right here in the Antelope Valley, Do Not miss this opportunity!

The workshop is $30 in advance for MECDA members, $35 for non-members, add $5 at the door. Pre-payment is available through PayPal at DCMECDA@MECDA.ORG

Space is limited, pre-registration is highly encouraged. No refunds.

From 11 am to 5 pm the dance festival is held upstairs in the ballroom area.
Admission is $5 for MECDA members, $7 for non-members, $4 for performers.

There will be vendors, Middle Eastern food, music, friends and fun-and *you* can sign up to perform on the stage! Bring your friends and family to watch your star performance. You've worked hard in dance class all this time, now's the time to strut your stuff in a friendly, supportive environment. There are still some slots open for dancers, contact Blume at lellabellydancer@yahoo.com asap for your chance to shine on the big stage!

Afterwards; cheer on your friends, enjoy the music, admire (and buy!) the costumes, clothing, jewelry, music-necessary things, of course. Snack on tasty shish-kabob and baklava, and maybe you'll even win a raffle prize (if you get some tickets, don't forget)!

This is the big local belly dance shindig of the year, and I highly encourage folks to come out and support the dancers, instructors, dance art, vendors, and event organizers who work so hard to make your dance opportunities special all year 'round.

www.freewebs.com/dcmecda/showtimes.htm

There are still opportunities available for volunteers. Please contact Sedona at sedona@sedonadance.com to join our rockin' volunteer group!

Here's a teaser of the Jingle All The Way 2006 performances on You Tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPsefC0Y6e8

Jingle All The Way was held on December 14, 2006 at the Larry Chimbole Cultural Center in Palmdale, California through the Desert Communities Chapter of MECDA. This yearly event is done solely as a charity event to raise funds and collect toys for the youth in our community who are in need of assistance.

This year's theme was "Christmas Around the World" and the dancers chose a country to represent fusing belly dance with other countries' music and/or dance styles to celebrate a global holiday.

The performers in order of appearance on the clip and the countries they chose to represent are:

Zoe & Julia - (Russia)
Habibi - (Lebanon)
Galaxy - (Czechoslovakia)
Hiplash - (Africa)
Genie - (Germany)
Diana - (Italy)
Vichelle - (Australia)
Khalida - (Mexico)
Katia & Blume - (USA)

Jim Boz Workshops & Show in Santa Clara, December 10th

Sunday December 10th I will be teaching and performing in the Santa Clara (south of San Francisco) area of California

Come on down and check out two workshops I'm very proud to present:
1 - Dynamic Drills and Techniques: From sassy, we'll break down a few combinations into edible chunks, beginning with drills and exercises to achieve the proper presentation, through concept, energy flow, weight transitions, arm frames and all the delicious things that make the Middle Eastern dance geeks drool! I have not only concepts to share like texture sequencing and morphing, but a very different way of breaking down the steps to learning how to learn sequences of movements. I've heard some great feedback, and I'd love to hear yours -- come on down to check out the workshop. Although this class is suitable to all levels, I've found that beginning students find themselves able to grasp complex concepts, and advanced students and pros have been able to find that extra little twist intheir foundations that helps them excel in a new direction. I'm very proud of this material. I recently taught it on the East Coast to rave reviews.

2 - Shimmy Layers/Drum Solo & Accents/ Master Class: Oh, let me challenge you! I have such a different way of teaching choreographies. I really hope to inspire teachers to teach in a similar method, because although it takes alot of work to set up, you'll be amazed at how fast your students can grasp concepts of motion, energy, technique and expression! Add into it some of my signature concepts of foundation technique (TikTokBlehEenh!) and shimmy layers and we'll put together a more complex presentation of my latest drum solo choreography. It's most delicious!

My signature teaching style is designed to assist dancers move from 'doing moves' to moving and interpreting the music, defining textures that are organic rather than pure mechanics. It's the smoulder....the passion...Yum!

And then, I get to perform at a restaurant!
Those of you who know my performances know my big stage work. I'll admit, I love working restaurants. The intimate environment allows a fun presentation of the dance. I'm *really* looking forward to this show and getting to entertain. Ask the people who used to go to the restaurants I performed at in my...um....30's. :)
Workshop in Teaching Middle Eastern Dance

Due to strong interest, I have developed an intensive seminar on "Teaching Middle Eastern Dance." It is open to those currently teaching who would like to learn more approaches and have opportunities for feedback. It is also open to those who are thinking about teaching and need a foundation in dance education. The class is geared towards methods that can be incorporated into a number of Middle Eastern dance styles. Topics will cover kinesiological effectiveness of warm up, cold downs, and stretches, leaning style theory, cultural adaptation of movement instruction, and structuring creative movement exploration. Students will work on defining their personal philosophy of dance education and pedagogical style.

Classes will be held for 4 Sundays Oct 15, Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5
Classes are from 1 - 4pm.

17550 Burbank Blvd.
Suite P-1 (near White Oak).
Encino, CA 91316

For those who are interest in my teaching background here is a little history.

My first entry into teaching was while I worked on a B.A. in music education. During this time, I learned pedagogy and gained experience teaching string instruments to children and adults. As Middle Eastern dance became a priority in my life, I began applying techniques that I learned from music and ballet to my dance practice. Over ten years ago, I started teaching Middle Eastern dance studio classes. Since then I have taught beginners to professionals in traditional and experimental improvisations and choreographies. I also direct Ya Helewa! dance company. While attending graduate programs in dance at both UCLA and UCR, I took courses in dance pedagogy. These allowed me to continue developing my own method of teaching while gaining invaluable insights and feedback from dance educators such as Karen Clippenger, Judy Gantz-Siegel, Linda Tomko, and Sally Ness. At both institutes, I designed and taught accredited courses in Middle Eastern dance. I have also had the opportunity to teach in other universities for continuing adult education such as the Learning Tree and Golden Oaks. Currently, I am an instructor at Cal Poly, Pomona where I teach Belly Dance and World Dance courses.

If you plan on attending, please let me know ahead of time so I may send you material for the first meeting.

Thank you,
Amara

Sacred Art of Belly Dance

Hey Dancing Dames,

I just wanted to get the word out. My friend and amazing belly dancer/teacher Titanya Dahlin is going to be giving a workshop at the Feathered Pipe Ranch in Montana later this spring. I've got a prior engagement so I won't be able to make it this year, BUMMER. Though I thought you might be interested or help get the word out to your community about the workshop. These ladies are incredible dancers and the workshop is super WOMAN-EMPOWERING. The Dahlin sisters utilizes Chinese five element theory, journaling, creative art, meditation and play to create an awesome if not transformative experience.

The dates: May-13 thru 19 2006, Cost is $1050 and I'm pretty sure that includes food and lodging. So it's a fantastic soul reviving week to get you jazzed about your life and power as a woman. I know you already know about that cause you are a powerful woman yourself, and it's always nice to take a break from "your life" and refresh.

Check out the website: http://www.featheredpipe.com/ to see what the location looks like. I went to the Baxter Bell workshop last year so I got to experience the vibe. Excellent! Montana is beautiful in Spring. The clear fresh mountain air, warm days, cool nights. Stars, stars and more stars….oohhh, and they have a hot tub and wet/dry sauna and fantastic massage therapists available.

If you don't think you can afford the workshop on this short of notice… give'em a call at Feathered Pipe 406:442-8196 they are great ladies and might be able to help you out.

Meanwhile,

KEEP DANCING

MECDA Red tent hafla

The lovely Krisha and I would like to organize a red tent hafla! That’s right, a dance party/event focused on bringing the community together. Krisha had the fabulous idea of the DC, MT, and IE chapters jointly hosting it! We would like to have a meeting where we can all talk about our ideas and start organizing this. We're hoping for free workshops, a potluck, open dancing, live drum circle and much more:o)

Meeting is Saturday December 10 at 11am in Lancaster. Email me for directions!

Hope to see you all at the meeting:o) If you can't make it but are still interested in the event please send me an email and I'll keep you posted:o)
